Anna Pingen studied law at the University of Toulouse (France) and the University of Freiburg (Germany). During her study exchange in Germany (Erasmus programme), she was working as a research assistant for Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Ulrich Sieber at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law (at the time Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law) in Freiburg. In 2015, she completed her bachelor’s degree with a focus on private law at the University of Toulouse. In July 2016, she obtained the “Maîtrise en droit” in Toulouse after completing the “Master 1 Sciences criminelles et carrières judiciaires”.
In 2021, she was awarded her doctorate by the Department of Law of the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg. Her dissertation dealt with “Motivationsdelikte – ein deutsch-französischer Strafrechtsvergleich”. The comparative law thesis analyzes the criminal offenses that – in German and French law – criminalize the transmission of information that is considered to have a crime-promoting effect: the so-called motivational offenses. The work was awarded the Otto Hahn Medal of the Max Planck Society for outstanding scientific achievements in 2023.
Pingen’s Research disciplines and areas are criminal law theory, comparative criminal law, human rights law, incitement, hate speech and antisemitism.
In June 2021 she joined the project Seeing Antisemitism Through Law (SATL) as a researcher.
